Since this week is Thanksgiving, most Americans will be gathered together with family to share the holiday together. It is a time to give thanks to God for the blessings we enjoy as a nation, as a people, and as individuals. Here are some of the things I'm thankful for:
1. Family The core of a society is the strength of the family. But perhaps more importantly, the well being of the individual is determined to a large extent by the love and compassion offered by family. My family has been my strength and I appreciate their willingness to tolerate my weaknesses and extend to me the love that all of us need to feel throughout our lives.
2. Freedom What a blessing it is to live in a country where we have the freedom to worship, express our opinions, protest government policies we disapprove of, and live and work largely as we wish. Since I study politics for a living, I am well aware of other systems around the world where such freedoms are not available. Moreover, in our nation we have not always been willing to uphold such freedoms. Thankfully, we live in a time and in a place where such freedoms are cherished.
3. Peace Our county, state, and nation are places where there is peace, not violent conflict. Thinking about that peace reminds me of the wars around the world today and how many people in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Pakistan face upheavals in their lives as wars rage around them. I admire those who make it their calling to promote peace in the world, both at home and abroad.
4. Opportunity to Serve I appreciate the opportunity to serve. It helps give my life purpose and meaning. Thank you for letting me serve you as the chair of the county party. The cause of bringing better government to our area is a worthy one. I'm glad I have the opportunity to be a part of that effort.
There are needs and worthy causes all around us. We each should choose what we can do. We do need to take into consideration the circumstances of our lives. For some, that is heading a major volunteer service organization. For others, it might be donating a small amount of money or a few hours a month of precious time. Our own situations vary and no one should judge others. But we each should do what we can to find ways to serve others.
Thanksgiving is a time of giving of thanks to God for these blessings. What a marvelous time for reflection and re-dedication! Have an enjoyable Thanksgiving season.
