Don Jarvis Last week, Don Jarvis announced that he was running again for the state legislature. Don ran in 2008 and got 36 percent of the vote. No Democrat had gotten anywhere close to that in many years. In fact, no Democrat had ever run against Steve Clark during the previous four elections! Steve Clark is now resigning and will not be running next year. The open seat increases Don's chances of winning. Since he ran two years ago, it is likely Don now will be better known in the area than the Republican candidate, whoever he or she is. I applaud Don for sticking to it. It would have been easy for Don to say that he lost two years ago and it was hopeless. He didn't do that. That's because it isn't hopeless. The gains we made last time are what we are building on this year.
In fact, there will be an excellent group of candidates running this year. Other announcements like Don's will be coming shortly and Utah County voters will see that Utah County Democrats are not slinking away just because we didn't win any seats last time. To the contrary, we are keeping at it, building momentum, and organizing to win in 2010. These Republican incumbents can't run forever and when they retire, our candidates, particularly those who have already run once, we'll be in very good position. Just like Don. Keep checking the newspaper, your emails (if you're not on our email list, please sign up), and this space for announcements of another crop of candidates who can and ultimately will become our representatives in the state legislature. In the meantime, my thanks to Don for leading the way.
