 Richard Davis, Party Chair
I've been reading a book by James Carville and Paul Begala titled Take It Back: A Battle Plan for Democratic Victory. Carville and Begala were instrumental in the 1992 electoral victory of Bill Clinton. They've also worked as political consultants for other Democratic candidates.
The book was written before the presidential election, which may lead some people to say that it is irrelevant now. However, their message is highly relevant to us in Utah County. We're still working on Democratic victory. We're still trying to "take back" a two party system and legislators that care about human needs more than they do a rigid ideology of "no government." We want to "take back" ethics and compassion and a higher quality of life for all citizens of Utah.
Here are some of their key points that are relevant to us.
There will be a meeting of the Central Committee of the Utah County Democratic Party on Thursday, March 19, 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. at the Provo City Library at Academy Square, 550 N. University Ave., Provo.
The primary purpose of the meeting is to discuss and ratify the proposed new party Constitution. Central Committee members have been notified of the meeting either by email or postcard and have been provided access to the proposed new Constitution and the current Constitution.
If you believe you are a member of the Central Committee but have not yet received an email or postcard meeting notice, please contact county party Secretary Deon Turley at deon@utahcountydems.com or 801-367-0355.
The annual convention of the Utah County Democratic Party will be held Saturday, May 2, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon at the Orem Junior High School, located at 765 North 600 West in Orem. This is just south of Timpanogos Regional Hospital. The business of the convention includes elections for county party executive officers and legislative district officers. The keynote speaker will be Congressman Jim Matheson.
Registered Democrats and convention goers who register as Democrats at the convention and who are residents of Utah County are eligible to vote for candidates for county party executive officers and legislative district officers. Please bring your friends and neighbors and encourage them to register as Democrats if they haven't already done so.
The annual convention is a chance to hear about the progress of the County Party, meet with other interesting Democrats in the county, and find opportunities to become involved in the processes that strengthen democratic government. We hope you will join us.
Executive officers for the Utah County Democratic Party will be elected for two-year terms at the annual county convention on May 2, 2009 at Orem Junior High School. The following officers are up for election: Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. Elections for legislative district officers in all thirteen House Districts will also be held.
Candidates for executive office must be registered Democrats who are residents of Utah County. Candidates shall file an intention to run, preferably by email, between April 4 and April 18, with County Party Secretary Deon Turley to have their names included on the ballot (email deon@utahcountydems.com or call 801-377-5668). A filing should include the candidate's name, the office he or she intends to run for and contact information such as phone, home address and email address.

Candidates who ran for state legislature from Utah County in 2008 were honored by their supporters and party leadership at a dinner held on February 26 at the Somewhere Inn Time Reception Center in Lindon.
Keynote speaker Pat Jones, Utah Senate Minority Leader, commended the candidates for their outstanding credentials and for winning more voters than any other Democratic candidates in Utah County in many years. She said their strength and courage has been a great inspiration to her and to other Democrats throughout the state. "You are my heroes," she said.
